Digital Photography Techniques: Subjects : People
People
People are not the easiest subject for a photo. Most of the time people are in motion, doing tasks or having fun, having different moods. They are not the easiest, but probably the most interesting subject to take photos of.
There’s no problem if you take photos of family and friends, but if you are on a vacation trip it may be a good idea to ask permission to the people you want to take a photo of.
In ideal circumstances, with enough light, you can use a higher shutter speed and avoid ‘blurry’ photos.
There are different kinds of photos you can take with people as the subject:
- Portrait photos
- Baby photos
- Group photos
- Children playing
- People doing a job activity
- Sports activity
- People enjoying a vacation trip
- Retired people
- Photo models
- Fashion photography
The number of different situations is endless.
So, we will have to remember a number of rules, when we want to take photos with people.
1.Portrait Photos
Unless you want to take a passport photo, don’t let your subject look straight into the lens.
2. People in action
This kind of photos fall under the category ‘action photos’. You will need to perform accurate planning . Sometimes you will want to ‘freeze’ a motion.
Technique: When you want to freeze a motion, you will have to take several shots of the subject and choose the best one out. The shutter speed has to be high (above 1/250s). So, if you put the camera in ‘automatic mode’ there will have to be enough light.
Other times you will want to suggest ‘motion’ in your photos:
|
Technique: lower the shutter speed (< 1/60s) and move along with your subject. |
the blurry background suggests motion
The subject will then look a little ‘blurry’, which is permitted in this case.
